St. Valentines Day

It is believed Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other historical records suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

The surf has been so good around town I havn't left except the occasional trip to the other end of the county. I grew up surfing newport so its weird to have taken such a long break. Yesterday and today I ventured back and here is a little of what I got.

This winter has had so many swells that around town has been consistently good. I snapped these last night after my surf when the sun was setting. Tonight I got on it late and surfed till it was dark. Here is a little sample of what last night had to offer as the swell filled in and tonight was even better.

I don't normally surf on weekends, but haven't been in the water lately due to laziness, so me and Jack decided to crack the dawn to try and beat the morning high tide and weekend crowd and headed south. We were met with less than average crowd and a new nw'er filling in just enough to make it through the high tide. As we left the masses came and the wind changed.

I haven't been in the water as much lately. I lost my job and started a new one and haven't been motivated to get up and surf early. I had been riding my thruster alot and my longboard here and there. Today I decided to ride what I call my little nug its a 5'7" x 20 1/8" x 2 3/4 its a thruster that works great at soft point breaks. Here is a little taste of the surf this morning. It was better for the log but was fun mixing things up with the nug. I had a blast and I'm going back tomorrow with the log.

I heard many of the locals talking last night about how the art show almost seemed like a funeral for Becker. Well by the end of the night they decided to put the large Becker sign to rest on its final night.

As many know Becker surfboards in Corona del Mar closed its doors in the beginning of January. Brian Bent and some of the guys from Captain Fin decided to host an art show as a final farewell to a local surf shop that was there for almost two decades. Come out and have fun there will be tons of art FOR SALE.

A blue moon is a Full Moon that is not timed to the regular monthly pattern. Most years have twelve full moons which occur approximately monthly, but in addition to those twelve full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains an excess of roughly eleven days compared to the lunar year. The extra days accumulate, so that every two or three years (7 times in the 19-year Metonic cycle), there is an extra full moon. The extra moon is called a "blue moon." Different definitions place the "extra" moon at different times.

Checked the surf and snapped this quick shot and decided to spend some time shooting after my surf.

Get out of the water and there is a comotion in the parking lot about some guy who was caught breaking into cars. I got out of the water changed, then went to grab my camera to realize the guy broke into my car and stole it. I got lucky today and got all but my $20 bucks he stole back!

In the nineteenth century and up through the early 1890's this site was used for cattle ranching and agriculture. In 1899, wealthy businessmen from the area formed the Bolsa Chica Gun Club. To manage the water within Bolsa Chica, a network of dikes was created to prevent tidal exchange and form a series of ponds.
In the 1920's oil was discovered in the area and much of the site has been developed and managed for oil extraction activities ever since.

During World War II, some of the gun club buildings were used as barracks and gun batteries built as part of the Coastal Protection System to protect the coastline and oil resources from Japanese attack. The weapons were only ever fired for training exercises. Remains of the Panama-style gun mounts can still be seen at the site today on a hill overlooking the wetlands.
